Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Where am I?

A. You are sitting at a computer (or possibly browsing the internet on your phone) and have come across my book review blog. Welcome!

Q.  Why did you start this blog?

A.  I love reading but found myself increasingly not making time to do so, arguing that I was busy with work and just couldn’t spare the time. Since I’m trying to write a book of my own, this really is a shocking way to behave. In order to force myself to read every day I decided to make a game of it. Every time I finished a book, I’d write a summary of what I’d just read. I thought it would be fun to share these summaries online so I brushed up the prose a bit and turned them into short reviews.

Q. What kind of books do you review?

A. I review any genre of novels so long as they are targeted at Young Adults (12-16 year olds). I also may occasionally touch on crossover novels which also appeal to people outside of this age group (an example of this would be J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series which was aimed at younger audience but proved to be equally popular with teenagers and adults).

Q. How often do you update this blog?

A. I don’t have a regular schedule but I will post a review every time I finish reading a novel. How long this will take depends entirely on the length of the novel as I work full time and only really have time to read on evenings and weekends. I am hoping, however, that I will be able to post one review every week.

Q.  Do your reviews contain spoilers?

A.  I try to avoid large spoilers that would ruin the ending of a story but there is a chance that some of my reviews will contain small spoilers. If I think they are particularly distressing I will mark them within the review, however I can only apologise if you feel that I’ve impeded your enjoyment of the book.

There is nothing spoilerific above the cuts on my reviews, however, so you’re perfectly safe just to scroll down the main page without seeing anything unpleasant.

Q. Can I suggest a book for you to review?

A. Please do!  If you have any suggestions please leave a comment on one of my reviews or email me at the address listed on my Submissions Page and I will try my best to take a look at them. Although I have a personal preference for fantasy, science fiction and horror stories I will happily read and review anything that you send to me (though I can’t guarantee how quickly I’ll get to your request).

Q. I have written a book for Young Adults. Will you review it?

A. If it meets the criteria stated above, sure! Please just be warned that I will not give a good review to a book that I don’t think is well written so don’t ask me to read your novel if you’re expecting me to say nothing but nice things.

For more details on what kind of novels I will accept, and how to contact me, please visit my Submissions Page.

Q. Just what is an Arkham, anyway?

A. Arkham is a town that features prominently in the short stories of H.P. Lovecraft. One of its major landmarks was the Miskatonic University which had a rather impressive library. In modern pop-culture, it is also very well known for giving its name to Arkham Asylum from the Batman comics.

When I use to sell my old university text books on Amazon, I named my online store ‘Arkham Books’. Continuing on this theme, I decided to name this blog ‘Arkham Reviews’. There’s no real reason for it. It’s just because I like the Cthulhu Mythos an awful lot.

Q. What’s with the crocodile?

A. Sobek is the God of the Nile, fertility and young adult literature. He also very much enjoys having his photograph taken and who are we to argue with the will of a God?
